Led by a balanced attack and stout defense, the Mountaineers successfully defended their title to win back-to-back MPLL Summer Championships!

On Sunday, August 9th, the Mountaineers captured the 2020 Montana Premier Lacrosse League Summer Championship with a 13-5 win over the Drifters. The Mountaineers were led by balanced scoring and a stout defense, overcoming the initial Drifter onslaught and controlling much of the second half.

Jacob Johnson (Drifters) kicked off the scoring with an awesome diving goal about one minute into the game. Harrison Wolpoe extended the early Drifters lead about thirty seconds later, and the game was off to a fast pace. A nice fast break for the Mountaineers and a finish by Mekhi Davis got them on the board, and Taigen Hagen followed with a solid step down shot to tie the game 2-2. Alden Hellum fired right back and pushed the Drifters back in the lead with a monster 2-point goal on a man-up play. A short stop in play for an injury allowed the Mountaineers to re-group, and after busting a Drifters clear jumped out with two quick goals and then held pace until halftime, taking an 8-4 lead into the half.

Hagen extended the Mountaineers lead on their first possession of the second half with a nice backhand goal. Johnson got the second half scoring going for the Drifters with a nifty one handed goal to bring the score to 9-5. However, Mountaineers continued to control the pace and possession time, and Nico Bugni locked down Johnson to really throw off the Drifters offense.

Overall it was an awesome weekend to end our summer season of MPLL action. We are so thankful to the players and families who supported the sport this summer and helped us grow the game!
